MANGO
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, mango is one of the main tropical fruits grown in Vietnam. Vietnam is the 13th biggest mango producer in the world with a total planted area of over 115,000 hectares nationwide, with total output reached 968.7 thousand tons in 2022. Mango is grown the most in the Mekong Delta, accounting for about 55% of the total mango area of the country. Despite of big producer, Vietnamese mango only accounts for 1.51% of the global exports. To increase compliance capacity to meet market requirements, the project established partnerships with key industry stakeholders, developed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and an export demonstration chain, introduced new more sophisticated technology in phase 1. The foundations of phase 1 will be extended in phase 2. Phase 2 also continue to address some of the key enablers in skills, technology & innovation, products, supply chain & market.
POMELO
Pomelo is a specialty fruit of Vietnam, with natural sweetness and characteristic aroma. Vietnam has a pomelo production area of 105,400 hectares, with an output of nearly 905,000 tons in 2022. In phase 1, project has invested in upgrading packing house infrastructure. Phase 2 will be able to build on this investment by developing responsive efficient systems, standards, technical regulations and requirements on quality in target markets. The pomelo export chain is less complicated than mango, creating great opportunities for scale expansion. In addition, coordinate with fruit supply from growing regions to improve current export results. The majority of the SOPs developed in Phase 1 can be easily modified for pomelo. In addition to fresh production, pomelo also has great potential for processing, creating opportunities to add value.
DURIAN
2023 is a memorable year for Vietnamese durian exports with an export value of nearly 2.2 billion USD, durian has risen to become the leading product in the fruit and vegetable export industry. Vietnam's durian output reached 1,152,760 tons, production area reached 122,514 hectares in 2023. However, there is a very high risk of oversupply in the coming years. Most of the necessary standards and technical regulations have not been developed and are currently exported through a relatively complex supply chain. This will hinder future expansion into modern markets. Although the industry still brings quite high profits and has the financial capacity to be able to invest itself, it helps the industry meet one of the main conditions for transformation. As with grapefruit, the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) can easily be modified for the durian export chain.
PASSION FRUIT
Purple passion fruit is a typical tropical fruit and very familiar in Vietnam. In 2023, Vietnam's passion fruit growing area reached 9,500 hectares, concentrated mainly in the Central Highlands region, with total national output reached 188.9 thousand tons. While Vietnam has potential for the fresh passion fruit industry, fresh fruit exports are limited, especially to plant quarantine markets. Passion fruit can become a processed product that solves phytosanitary problems and has significant expansion opportunities. Some inefficiencies, compliance and standards problems exist in the current processing system. Additionally, there is no reprocessing of waste products in current systems to obtain additional value.
